And so it was that on the last day of official FV fixtures the GGG's ended up facing Fawkner FC in the Metro 15/16A Girls Grand Final.
It was a windy day out at Aston Fields with the gale blowing strongly away from the clubrooms end of the pitch.
Having won the toss, the GGG's elected to kick with the wind and within 30 seconds of kick off nearly had the ball in the back of the Fawkner net as Tamila Iluffi crossed a great ball in which just went past Isabella Spiteri's outstretched foot. The GGG's kept on pressing and minutes later hit the crossbar from a great header by Tanisha Gullotti.
After the initial GGG onslaught, Fawkner fought back strong and started creating chances of their own. Playing against the gale force wind, our opponent threatened a few times before half time was blown with the scores tied at 0:0.
The GGG's knew they were up against it - a strong head wind in the second half and an opponent which has been a scoring machine in the last 7-8 rounds. The message at half time was to work and work harder again.
Upon restart the game was an arm wrestle with both sides having chances and both keepers were kept busy with some impressive saves. Fawkner was showing exactly why they finished 3rd on the ladder and knocked out 2nd placed Hume City in the previous week and the GGG's were fighting back with the spirit and determination which has seen them make the grand final in their inaugural year.
Just when it looked like the game was heading for extra time, a perfect free kick was taken by the GGG's which saw the ball land in the hot zone with Tamila Iluffi swooping onto the opportunity and putting it away!!! 71st minute and the GGG's were 9 minutes away from being the State Champions!! The noise from our supporters was amazing - the Green Gully crowd was huge!!!
The longest 9 minutes followed with Fawkner pushing hard and also saving what looked like a certain goal by Tamila again before the referee finally blew her whistle!!
The celebrations were loud, the tears flowed and the girls sang the song like it's never been sung before!!!
Thank you to Fawkner FC for a great game played in good spirit and sportsmanship - full respect to Tony (don’t know his surname but will find out) and his team!!
