Our staff and players were under no illusion that today was going to be one of our toughest tests since beating Avondale, myself and the gaffer have been watching Melb Knights for a number of weeks with one eye on this game, so we were prepared for their style of play, mainly their out of possession press which is as good as anyone in this league and to a certain extent very different to how most teams do it.
We were prepared with a lot of work in the week going into our game day plan. I didn't feel they caused us any problems on the day with their style of play, both teams in the first half were a little flat if I'm honest, we stuck to our values however it was not done to the tempo we are used to seeing so this was addressed at half time.
In the second half our ball retention wasn't to the high standards that we have seen from our group in the season. And this being the case they picked our pocket in possession and went one up.
I felt a good reaction from the boys to get back into the game and that was the case, and deserved our equaliser. I felt after that there was only one team pressing for the three points which was us, clear to the observer that Knights were slowing the game down and were happy with the draw.
Our group pushed ‘til the end, but due to some in possession decision making and our final ball decision making we were unable to get the job done in the end.
Truth being told we had a number of boys not up for selection due to injury which made us need to play boys out of their preferred position, however a positive is the boys did a great job not in their natural position and another few not feeling great with illness, however they started the game and gave their best on the day and that's all we can ask.
As staff we are under no illusion every game from now ‘til the end of the season is super important, our playing group is hungry to finish as high as possible.
This proud club deserves at least to finish in the top three best teams in the state and we will give it everything ‘til the last day of the season to make this happen.
