Match Report by Coach Ted Latomanski.
This match against South Melbourne was a great opportunity for us to play against one of the best teams in the competition.
The game began with us setting up trying to stop South playing out from the back and l feel we did this well throughout the whole game starting with our front 2 and across the middle of the park, as a result South was forced to go long on numerous occasions which they did not like.
Chances for us were rare in the opening half as we struggled to keep the ball and that was mainly due to panic and a lack of composure, everything was needlessly rushed.
Defensively we looked ok and South failed to really create any clear cut chances and then in the 36min we gave away a foul in the box which resulted in a penalty and the South forward put that chance away. 1 nil South
Half time was not far away and minutes before the half time whistle we were caught napping out wide and South crossed a ball into our box creating a chance that the South striker calmly slotted the ball into the net. 2 nil at half time.
The half time message was to try and keep the ball but more importantly be patient with less panic, and look to have our fullbacks get involved with the play.
Having to make forced changes pre game gave an opportunity for John Santi to play his 1st start (left back) in a long time as well as give Brandon Joveski (striker) a chance to start for his 1st time.
Josh Velado was also back in the squad after recovering from a long term injury.
The second half was better however we failed to break down a solid South defence.
Chances were scarce but we did keep the ball better and the boys showed the effort and desire that was lacking in the 1st half.
Overall a poor day as we had high expectations that we could and were good enough to get a result.
We still strive to working hard and trying to get back to back wins, something not done all season.
