VALE WILLIE VASSALLO

Remembering Willie Vassallo: A True Gully Legend

Green Gully SC is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of club legend and Maltese football icon, Willie Vassallo, who died on Sunday, April 6, 2025, in Melbourne, aged 75.

Willie was more than a great footballer — he was a gentleman, a mentor, and a pillar of our club’s history.

Universally admired by volunteers, coaches, players, and fans alike, his impact on Green Gully — and football more broadly — will be felt for generations.

Born in Gżira, Malta, in 1949, Willie forged an extraordinary playing career in the 1960s and 70s, captaining both Floriana FC and the Malta national team.

His leadership and sheer footballing intelligence earned him widespread acclaim, not least during his standout performance against England at Wembley in 1971.

Willie joined Green Gully in 1977, initially on a six-month guest stint from Floriana — the very club whose green and white colours inspired Gully’s own. But that short stint turned into a long-lasting legacy.

Over 164 appearances, Willie played a central role in one of the most successful eras in our club’s history:

  • 1979 Ampol Cup
  • 1979 Green Gully Ajax Player of the Year
  • 1981 Victorian State League, Dockerty Cup, Ampol Cup
  • 1982 Victorian State League, Dockerty Cup, State League Cup
  • 1983 Victorian State League, Ampol Cup
  • A member of the 1984 & 1985 National Soccer League squads

Willie’s presence on the pitch was commanding — tireless in midfield, precise in distribution, and capable of changing the course of a match in an instant.

Perhaps even more memorable was his character off the pitch.

Kind, humble, and generous with his time, he was beloved by all who knew him.

As Green Gully Operations Manager Ray Mamo reflected:

“It’s a very sad day for the club. Our deepest condolences go to Antoinette and the entire Vassallo family.

“Willie brought an incredible wealth of experience to Gully. Everyone who knew him speaks of him as a true gentleman.

“He let his football do the talking — he was clever, composed, and deeply respected.

“His influence extended well beyond his playing days, mentoring young footballers and shaping the lives of many both here and in Malta.”

Willie’s legacy continues at Gully through his son Brandon Vassallo, who also enjoyed a decorated playing career with the club winning multiple titles, further strengthening the Vassallo name in our history.

In honour of Willie’s life and contribution to the game, all Green Gully teams — from juniors to seniors — will wear black armbands this weekend.

A minute’s silence will be observed at every fixture to pay tribute to his memory.

Our thoughts are with his beloved wife Antoinette, son Brandon, daughter Verlie Bozinovski, and the extended Vassallo family during this time of mourning.

Vale, Willie Vassallo.
