S2025 RD19 | MATCH REVIEW | GREEN GULLY SC VS MELBOURNE KNIGHTS

Gully Shine Bright Under Somers Street Lights

On a chilly night at Knights Stadium, Green Gully delivered a performance to warm the hearts of their travelling fans, dismantling Melbourne Knights 4-1 in emphatic style.

The Cavaliers signalled their intentions early, Aamir Abdallah forcing Knights keeper Gabriel Matti into action inside the opening minute. The hosts responded quickly, and it took the crossbar to deny Leo Mazis a spectacular volley, offering an early glimpse of drama that would unfold throughout the evening.

Gully broke the deadlock midway through the first half when Jalil Regague capitalised on a goalmouth scramble. A mix-up in the Knights’ defence allowed Regague to poke home from close range, gifting the visitors a precious lead.

As halftime loomed, Gully doubled their advantage. High pressing from Gianluca Iannucci forced a defensive error, allowing him to tee up Josh Hope, who finished calmly past Matti. It was a timely strike that left the Knights reeling at the interval.

Melbourne Knights started the second half determined to claw their way back into the contest. Liam Driscoll produced a pivotal reaction save from Ciaran Bramwell, preserving Gully’s two-goal cushion.

Just before the hour mark came the night’s standout moment. A half-cleared corner fell perfectly for Iannucci, who unleashed a stunning first-time volley into the top corner – a goal that had even the home fans nodding in reluctant admiration.

Though the Knights again found woodwork through Thomas Woerndl’s header, Gully swiftly punished their wastefulness. A sweeping counterattack saw Deklan Wynne’s pinpoint cross converted at the far post by Hope, completing his brace and all but securing the points.

Bramwell eventually grabbed a consolation from the penalty spot late on, but it did little to dampen Gully’s impressive outing. The hosts’ frustrations were summed up in stoppage time, as another chance bounced off the post.

The final whistle brought well-deserved celebrations from David Chick’s side, a morale-boosting result that could provide just the lift needed to ignite a late-season charge towards the finals.
