Whilst recent defeats have had very little positives to provide the interim coaching staff, Saturday’s draw was more than honourable: it was completely undeserved. Nathan Simes’ first goal in Gully colours deserved to be the moment that broke the season open, and for ninety-four minutes it was. Then, a stoppage-time scramble, a double deflection, and three points turned back into one.
The Cavaliers need to find a way to build on the positives against a Dandenong City side that snapped out of its struggles with a 3-0 demolition of Bentleigh Greens. With last season’s Grand Finalists sputtering to life, Gully may be catching Hajduk at precisely the wrong moment.
The context on the ladder makes this one of the more significant fixtures of the season so far. Dandenong City sit third from bottom on five points, within two points of Green Gully at the foot of the table. If results fall their way, a win for the Cavaliers could lift them above two relegation rivals, and level on points with Altona Magic in 11th.
Dandy City’s position on the table comes with an asterisk: they carry a four point deduction from last year’s Grand Final, which means their actual 2026 form (2 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses from eight games) is considerably better than the ladder suggests. If not for the deduction, Nick Tolios’ side would be ninth.
For the Cavaliers, the blueprint from the Dandenong Thunder performance is the template to carry into this one. Sit deep when required, stay compact, and make the most of set pieces when they arrive. Carry that across to Endeavour Hills, take the chances when they come, and this is the kind of fixture where a season can finally turn.
The margins at the bottom are thin. Friday night is the chance to use them.
