Last Friday our Senior boys kicked off the season against the Oakleigh Cannons at Jack Edwards Reserve. There were plenty of new faces on the pitch for us which only added to the excitement of the opening round. Plus, Oakleigh are a strong side and have given us trouble in recent years so were curious to see how the evening fared.
Oakleigh began the match in a strong position. Despite the strong back and forth, and the intensity from the boys, the goals were falling their way, leaving us in a 2-0 position nearing the end of the first.
A well taken volley gave Josh Hope his first in the green and white, bringing us to 2-1.
As we brought in the next 45 minutes the depth of our list became clear. Subbing in the likes of
Ethan Brooks, Matthew Crooks and Gianluca Iannucci allowed us to add some fresh legs to the game. Iannucci made the most of his minutes as he entered with an instant impact, tying the scores at 2-2.
From there the intensity went to an 11 and the attempts going forward were relentless. That drive eventually paid off, landing us a penalty to which Nahuel Bonada delivered the sealer.
Oakleigh of course tried to snatch back the win but the boys were up to the challenge. They held the line and saw us to the first three points of 2022 in a challenging away fixture.
This week our boys are back on the home pitch against Altona Magic. The action kicks off at 8pm this Friday. Don’t miss it!
