S2022 RD11 MATCH PREVIEW | NPL Men | GREEN GULLY SC V HEIDELBERG UNITED

Tonight our seniors top off a massive week of football by taking on Heidelberg United at Green Gully Reserve. Due to the mid-week Australia Cup game against Fitzroy, this will be their third game in seven days before a slightly extended break to next Saturday when they will face Eastern Lions away.

Last week our boys picked up a 1-0 win over Hume City at home. Despite Hume’s winless season it was a tough contest and we left things closer than many thought we would when it ended. Though the three points are with us now and we’re establishing a strong base for the rest of the year.

On Tuesday our boys took on Fitzroy City at Kevin Bartlett Reserve for Round 5 of the Australia Cup. We saw Alex Salmon, Mitch Graham and David Thomson take the field, which is always good to see.

The first half had Fitzroy looking dangerous, threatening us in defense, but were ultimately without a score. We came out refreshed in the second half and quickly established a lead. Mamadi Kamara tallied three goals for the day in what was a strong performance and key to our 3-0 victory.

Heidelberg are also alive in the Australia Cup, having recently defeated Altona East Phoenix 5-0 at home. In the regular season, they somehow recorded an even bigger margin against

Dandenong City at 6-0. The week before that they defeated Hume City 3-1, seemingly ending their run of bad games which had them on three consecutive losses.

Earlier in the season they managed to defeat Melbourne Knights 4-0, who sit just below us on the table, and took an even bigger scalp from Oakleigh Cannons (2-0) who currently sit in second spot.

They have recorded big margins against teams in our position so while their position may not reflect it, Heidelberg have shown to play like a top-3 team. Our boys will be prepared for the challenge and, like always, not underestimate their opponent.

Be sure to support the boys tonight at 8pm at Green Gully Reserve. It’s set to be a big match.
