S2023 RD1 MATCH PREVIEW | GREEN GULLY SC V OAKLEIGH CANNONS

This Friday our Seniors and 21’s travel to Oakleigh as we face the Cannons at Jack Edwards Reserve. The last time we played the Cannons away in Round 1 was last season which saw a comeback win as Josh Hope, Gianluca Iannucci and Nahuel Bonada all found the back of the net.

The Under 21’s also won in their opening fixture against the Cannons as they won that fixture 2-1. In the return fixture at Green Gully Reserve the visitors saw the game out 2-0 in a tough contest.

Our Seniors finished the season in fourth place by narrowly losing out to South Melbourne in our elimination final, we also had a great cup run which saw us make the Round of 16 of the Australia Cup after many hard-fought wins to make it to the round of 32 and then a win against Wollongong United saw us play Peninsula Power in the Round of 16 as they won that fixture.

Our 21’s had a strong back end of the season which saw them pick up form and important points from to finish off the season in tenth position. We also saw many senior debuts and consistent appearances from many of our 21’s and juniors throughout our program.

Oakleigh Cannons last season finished in third place which saw them progress to the NPL finals series to eventually win it as they beat regular season champions South Melbourne 5-0 in the Grand Final. They also had Australia Cup success as they made it all the way to the semi-finals, losing to the eventual champions Macarthur FC 5-2.

We are pleased to announce that Luc Jeggo will be our 2023 captain and is the first former Green Gully junior player to captain our senior side since 1962.

We hope to see you all there in the opening fixture of our 2023 campaign!
