S2024 RD09 | MATCH PREVIEW | GREEN GULLY SC VS SOUTH MELBOURNE FC

Green Gully SC head on the road for a second straight road game, when they head to Lakeside Stadium to take on league leaders South Melbourne on Friday night at 7:30 PM.

Gully were minutes away from securing their first league win since Round 3 against Dandenong City last weekend after Mohamed Adam’s opener had Stephen Downes’ side ahead in second-half stoppage time.

However, a Tom Giannokopoulos long range goal cancelled out Adam’s opener and ensured Gully would only come away with a point at Frank Holohan Soccer Complex.

It means Gully remain in 10th on the ladder, four points behind Dandy who sit in sixth and occupy the final top six spot on offer.

Overall, it’s been an improved run of form for Gully, who either side of their spirited draws came away with a win in the Dockerty Cup over North Geelong Warriors, setting up a clash against Ballarat City in Round 5 later this month.

Their focus now turns to South, a side who are still undefeated from their first eight games to start the season and sit top of the ladder heading into this week.

Esteban Quintas’ side survived a stern test on the road against Dandenong Thunder last Saturday night, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 win, thanks to second-half strikes from Harrison Sawyer and Ross Archibald.

Sawyer has been the man in form for South to start this season, scoring eight goals from his opening eight matches to sit atop the NPL Victoria Golden Boot charts.

Friday night’s clash will be South’s first game back at Lakeside since March 8 – where they drew 1-1 against Heidelberg United – ending a four game road stand in all competitions.

These two sides have plenty of history, dating back to their time in the VPL, but Gully haven’t beaten Hellas since May 2018 – where Josh Barresi, Nick Krousouratis and Kieran Dover found the net in a 3-0 win at Lakeside.

UNDER 23S LOOKING TO CONTINUE RED HOT START IN TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH

Our Under 23s will also take the field this Saturday against South, looking to continue their hot start to the campaign at Darebin International Sports Centre.

Gully beat Dandy 3-1 last week, with Shifa Ahmed, Phillip Pannunzio and Solomon Tebeje all hitting the scoreboard, meaning they remain top of the ladder.

South, however, remain only a spot behind in second place after thrashing Dandenong Thunder 7-0 on Saturday, continuing their undefeated start to the season.

The action gets underway at 3 PM.
