S2024 RD24 | MATCH PREVIEW | GREEN GULLY SC VS AVONDALE FC

Green Gully SC will look to get back on the winner’s list this Saturday afternoon when they host Avondale at Green Gully Reserve.

Gully’s finals hopes were extinguished on Saturday evening, when they lost 3-2 to Port Melbourne Sharks on the road, meaning they will miss out on the top six for the second consecutive season.

Ramon Falzon’s side showed tremendous mettle to battle back from a goal down and take the lead after a brilliant goal from Gianluca Ianucci and Jamie Latham strike.

However, the Sharks responded to wrestle back the advantage and came away with a big win at JL Murphy Reserve to keep their hopes of playing in the finals alive.

Gully – who sit in 11th – will be looking to finish their season on a high note, starting with a clash against the Avengers on Saturday afternoon.

Avondale sit in second on the ladder – a point clear of Hume City – in the race for an all-important top two berth, after seeing off Dandenong Thunder at home on Saturday afternoon.

Kristian Trajceski and Stefan Zinni found the net either side of Wade Dekker’s equaliser to secure a huge victory for the reigning champions, which also kept their slim hopes of winning the Premiership alive after South Melbourne dropped points against Dandenong City on Friday night.

The gap currently sits at six points heading into this weekend’s contest, meaning a loss against Gully coupled by a South result against the Sharks would seal the Premiership for Hellas.

Three points is also imperative for Avondale as they look to stave off competition from not only Hume, but Heidelberg United and Oakleigh Cannons who are both three points behind the Avengers.

Gully won the reverse fixture earlier this season at Avenger Park 1-0, thanks to a goal from Taylor Schrijvers and will be hoping for a similarly impressive performance against Zoran Markovski’s side this weekend.

Kick-off is at 1 PM, with the Under 23s in action straight afterwards at 3:30 PM.

Gully’s Under 23s took another step closer to wrapping up top spot with a 3-1 win over Port Melbourne. Now, they only need a point against the 10th placed Avengers to secure the Premiership, as their gap over South sits at nine points with three games remaining.
