S2024 RD24 | MATCH REVIEW | GREEN GULLY SC VS AVONDALE FC

At Green Gully Reserve, Green Gully SC faced a tough challenge against a high-flying Avondale FC, enduring a heavy 6-1 defeat that saw the visitors demonstrate their prowess and depth in a commanding performance.

The match began on a sour note for Gully as Avondale struck early. Just two minutes into the game, Avondale’s Trajcevski capitalised on an opportunity created by Cian Cuba, who chose to pass rather than shoot after breaking through the defence. Trajcevski took his time to pick his spot and gave Avondale an early lead.

Despite the early setback, Green Gully attempted to respond, creating several chances. Jamie Latham and Josh Hope both had opportunities, with Latham forcing a save and Hope striking directly at the goalkeeper. Gianluca Iannucci also tested Avondale’s defence with a free kick and a shot from distance, both causing trouble but ultimately being thwarted by goalkeeper Tom Manos.

The pressure from Gully, however, was not enough to prevent Avondale from doubling their lead just before half-time. In a crowded penalty area, Trajcevski found the net again, poking the ball home amid a goalmouth scramble to make it 2-0 as the teams headed into the break.

The second half saw Avondale assert their dominance even further. Blake Carpenter struck the post with a free kick early on, signalling more to come from the visiting side. Avondale’s relentless attack paid off with four more goals in the half, including strikes from Stefan Zinni and Yitay Towns, who found the net through a mix of individual brilliance and tactical precision. Liston Diaz added a late goal to complete the scoring for Avondale.

Green Gully’s lone bright spot came from Gianluca Iannucci, who managed to pull one back in the 62nd minute. Isolated on the left wing, he wriggled around his marker to fire a fierce shot at the near post, which Manos couldn’t keep out.

The team will look to draw lessons from this encounter and aim to bounce back in their next outing, continuing to build and refine their approach under coach Ramon Falzon.

The boys are back in action on Wednesday night when we take on A-League side Melbourne Victory in a friendly.
