S2025 RD15 | MATCH PREVIEW | GREEN GULLY SC VS OAKLEIGH CANNONS

After two impressive league wins on the bounce, Green Gully faces Oakleigh Cannons on Friday night in flying form, with a spot in the top six within touching distance.

The Cavaliers followed up a stunning 5-2 demolition of Avondale in Round 13 with a remarkable late turnaround to defeat Dandenong Thunder.

Gully trailed after Hassan Jalloh opened the scoring in the 57th minute, but Declan Wynne kick-started the comeback in the 79th with a piledriver to beat Jamie Young at his near post.

Matty Crooks put the home side in front just six minutes later, meeting Gianluca Iannucci’s pinpoint cross at the back post, before Elioan Kifle coolly slotted home in stoppage time to wrap up the points.

Aamir Abdallah remains Gully’s top scorer with eight goals so far, including a stunning hat-trick against Avondale.

The 2024 Gold Medallist seems to have recaptured last season’s form, but will be looking to make amends this week after he was denied from the penalty spot by Young in the second half.

Ajax has a decent record at Jack Edwards Reserve, with four wins from its last 11 trips to one of the toughest away grounds in the competition. Gully’s last victory at the venue came in 2022, when Josh Hope and Iannucci hit the scoreboard in a memorable 3-2 triumph.

Oakleigh sits in fourth place after a five-game winning streak through April came to a juddering halt in May, with defeats to high-flying Heidelberg and Avondale.

A tenacious 2-1 win with 10 men against South Melbourne has provided the only points this month for Chris Taylor’s side.

Former Gully favourite Alex Salmon is set to return from his red card at Lakeside, after serving the second game of a two-match ban in the Australia Cup against Hume City.

Tricky winger Joe Knowles is expected to miss out through injury, but captain Joe Guest has been in typically scintillating touch, with 11 goals and seven assists so far this campaign.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 pm, and we hope to see as many fans as possible clad in green and white for a Friday night blockbuster!
