S2025 RD22 | MATCH REVIEW | GREEN GULLY SC VS HEIDELBERG UNITED FC

Second-Half Surge Sees Heidelberg Overpower Gully

Football can be a cruel game. For Green Gully, what started as an evening full of promise ended in frustration as Heidelberg United produced a second-half masterclass, leaving the hosts with a bitter taste and a 3-0 defeat at Green Gully Reserve.

The match began with intensity and edge, as Heidelberg nearly took an early lead, striking the upright just minutes in. From there, the first half settled into a combative stalemate – both sides cautious, yet eager to exploit openings. Gully’s defensive grit was evident, but their rhythm was disrupted by a series of yellow cards, a symptom perhaps of their determination to assert authority against the league’s top side.

After a scoreless first half, Gully came out re-energised. Aamir Abdallah sparked life into the home fans with a dazzling piece of skill in the 51st minute, only to fire into the side netting. Moments later, Abdallah rose highest to meet Deklan Wynne’s pinpoint cross; his header looked destined for the net until Heidelberg keeper Yaren Sozer somehow clawed it away with a save for the highlight reel.

As often happens, missed chances proved costly. With just under twenty minutes remaining, Heidelberg’s Benjamin Collins rose powerfully at a corner to head the visitors into the lead – a blow from which Gully never recovered.

Ten minutes later, the visitors were handed a penalty after a foul on Asahi Yokokawa, who calmly stepped up and converted, doubling their advantage and silencing the home crowd.

With Gully pushing forward in desperation, Heidelberg sealed the contest two minutes from time. Jamal Ali, the tireless right-back who began the decisive move, tapped home after Peter Klaassen’s initial effort was parried.

At the final whistle, the 3-0 scoreline perhaps flattered Heidelberg, but highlighted their ruthless efficiency. For Gully, the defeat stings – a harsh lesson against the league’s benchmark – but with the finals race far from decided, David Chick’s men must dust themselves off quickly and prepare to fight another day.

The game was also notable for the debut of new signing Josh Heaton, who arrived at the club after a stint in the State Leagues with Westvale, having played last season at FC Melbourne Srbija in their promotion-winning campaign in VPL2.
