Green Gully travel to Paisley Park on Saturday evening to face an Altona Magic side that is also searching for answers. Goran Lozanovski’s team sit 12th on four points, having gone three games without a win.
A 1-1 draw at Melbourne City in Round 6 followed losses to St Albans (0-1 at home in R4) and Bentleigh (0-2 at home in R5). That Bentleigh result is a shared reference point. Both sides have been on the wrong end of the Greens recently, though the manner of Gully’s 4-0 defeat stings considerably more.
On paper, this is a fixture the Cavaliers should target. Altona are struggling at home, having lost two of their last three at Paisley Park. Their points tally is modest. They are not one of the division’s heavyweights. But nothing is “on paper” when you are bottom of the league with one point to your name. It has to be earned on the pitch, and the Cavaliers have not managed that consistently enough in the opening six rounds.
The core problem remains the same. Two goals in six matches. It is the worst attacking return in the competition.
The defensive record (minus 13 goal difference) gets the attention, but the collapse at Bentleigh obscures the fact that the first half was competitive, that the Cavaliers were only a goal down at the break.
The issue is not effort or structure for 45 minutes. It is sustaining it for 90, and finding the net when chances come.
Weier and Crooks both started at Kingston Heath after time on the sidelines, and a full week’s training together should help. Fitness and match rhythm take time, but the squad needs whatever these two can bring.
The squad depth has been tested across the opening rounds, and having key players available again matters more at this end of the table than anywhere else.
Paisley Park is a tight ground with a vocal home crowd. Altona Magic, a club with deep Croatian heritage in the western suburbs, will not make this easy. Their draw at Melbourne City last week showed they can be competitive away from home, and they will view this fixture the same way Gully should: a chance to finally pick up a win against a team in similar form.
Both sides need the three points. Both know it.
