S2022 RD12 Match Previews | Green Gully SC v Eastern Lions

Today our under 21’s and seniors make the trip to Gardiners Creek Reserve to take on Eastern Lions for Round 12 of the NPL Victoria 2022 season.

The games will be accompanied by a special unveiling of the Jimmy Williams Stand, legend of both the Eastern Lions and Green Gully soccer clubs, as well a luncheon to commemorate and honour Williams’ legacy.

Our under 21’s will kick off the action first at 12:15pm against the 7th place Eastern Lions. Despite scoring four goals last week, our under 21’s still came off second best. The effort and drive is there but we haven’t had the results go our way for a couple weeks.

As previously noted, our boys are without a few key players due to injury so we’re not at full strength come game day. Regardless, the boys have improved when compared to a month ago, scoring multiple goals in each of their last three performances.

Last week Eastern picked up a 2-1 victory against Hume City, while two weeks prior they defeated Melbourne Knights 4-1. Though impressive, in Round 11 they lost 3-1 to 12th placed St Albans, a team we impressively fought back to defeat in the round prior.

We understand anything can happen week to week but the boys will be prepared and ready come game day.

Our seniors last month have seen a major improvement when compared with the last. Including Australia Cups, we are yet to see a loss from our last six games. We picked up a major result last week in extreme conditions, with Gianluca Iannucci hitting the board twice in what was a beautiful team performance.

Comparatively, Eastern Lions have been having a difficult season. They have picked up one win this season and one draw with the rest being losses. Though this will not have affected our planning. The boys know what a hungry team can do — a lot to gain and nothing to lose. Hume City last fortnight made this very apparent as we defeated them by only a goal.

Anything can happen but we’ll be ready. Follow along online or come down to Gardiners Creek Reserve and get around our teams as they look to honour the great Jimmy Williams with a great showing. Kick off will be at 12:15pm and 3:00pm respectively.
